Impact of Digital Technology on Designs

Digital media has impacted significantly on the main aspects of the design industry like designs and design management. Digital technologies have influenced designs and design management both positively and negatively (Jonson, 2005). Creative industries are turning into computer-based. In other words, the level of creativity is shifting from analogue and mechanical input to computer-based input (Kalay, 2006). However the digital technologies have made the process of designing faster and more accurate, it has also killed talents and creativity amongst designers.

There are more digital-based designers than human or mechanically developed designers. In fact, the level of attrition of human-based designers has been at a lower rate. On the other hand, creative industries have seen the rise of digital-based designers. Digital-based designers do everything through the computer (Beetham & Sharpe, 2013). The creativity and innovativeness that every existing amongst designers have since dried up from the industry. It is important to note that digital technologies have been responsible for a number of digital or computer-based designs. Such designs, even though maybe considered superior to mechanically developed designs, lack concepts and components of customisation. In other words, designs need to be identified with end users of customers (Kalay, 2006). When designs are not in line with the needs and wants of end users of customers, then the process of designing is termed not only as ineffective and inefficient but also unsuccessful. In this respect, it is evident that digital technologies have been responsible for the growth of digital or computer-based designers on the one hand and the other hand the death of human-based designers (Beetham & Sharpe, 2013). In addition, digital technologies are known for improved efficiency and speed with respect to creation or development of products, services, or systems that would improve the living standards of a particular community. Hence, there have been mixed feelings about the role or impact of digital technology on designs and design management.
